ABSTRACT

It is the aim of this chapter to offer a directional theory o f meaning in opposition to semantic descriptions of meaning as strict sense. Different discursive practices are shown to exhibit typically different constructions of meanings as a result of the convergence of linguistic guiding principles and processes of meaning ne gotiation which are not themselves linguistic. In presenting this directional ap proach to meaning this chapter addresses such issues as metaphor, reference, and the notion of literal meaning.
