ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates that propositional opacity or, roughly, the relative vague ness of linguistic expressions is a strength rather than a weakness, if we are prepared to extend liberally the limits of interpretive exploration. But no matter how radical our readings may claim to be, they are determined to a great degree by the hermeneutical frames we bring to bear on texts. This chapter also suggests that interpretive strategies accepted in the discourses of the literary are by no means confined to this particular practice but also play a considerable role in the language games of everyday life.
