ABSTRACT

Morris Janowitz has also influenced the international development of military sociology, as he supervised the doctorate work of scholars from all over the world and created networks of social and political scientists in the field. His name can moreover be connected with other scholars who began their careers with the end of World War II: Samuel Huntington and Samuel Stouffer, to name but two. All this work on the sociology of the military started with his own experience as a military person in the Second World War. Having graduated in economics, he was drafted into the army, where he joined the Research and Analysis branch of the Office of Strategic Services in London. Paul Chambers and Napisa Waitoolkiat have revealed how much armed forces in Southeast Asia, in particular Thailand but also elsewhere on the continent, have gained control over economic resources.
