ABSTRACT

Stressing the position and role of women in and around the military, Cynthia Enloe, born in 1938, followed in Jane Addams' footsteps. Like Jane Addams and others she linked the feminist perspective to the search for peace. Developing a feminist view on military affairs, however, was not Cynthia Enloe's first scholarly activity. Feminization refers to ideas that any particular thing is 'naturally' or 'especially' aligned with women, girls and femininity, whereas masculinization promotes anything that is 'naturally' or 'especially' aligned with men, boys and manliness. Non-military women in garrisons, bases or camps mostly perform non-core jobs such as laundry, cleaning, catering and administrative work. These women leave the base after working hours; they and their families are dependent on these jobs. Civilian women who do formal work outside of the camp or base can be anyone, including fellow compatriots who perform specialist work on-line from their homes.
