ABSTRACT

French social philosopher and sociologist Michel Foucault has published a remarkable collection of writings, some of which have less or almost nothing to do with the military, but some have – among them a series of lectures at the College de France on the need to defend society. Michel Foucault provides perspectives that are new and original, with, however, a pessimistic undertone that not all appreciate or agree with. The British accounting scholars Keith Hoskin and Richard Macve have studied how the development of educational practices made possible the near-universal adoption of accountancy standards in business. The introduction of writing in an alpha-numerical system including the 'double-entry' technique led to the acceptance of standards that control and discipline the behaviour of workers. Airports are places where border management is particularly relevant. Here security and efficiency concerns need to be aligned and public organizations and private companies must act together in order to run their operations smoothly and safely.
