ABSTRACT

In seeking a simplified way of looking at trends and changes in urban development, urban dynamics is usually described as a four stage cyclus: (1) Industrialisation occurs with major growth for the manufacturing sector, (2) the service sector and transport facilities grow, (3) increased appreciation for quality of life and the rise of what can be called an environmental sector, and (4) rise of the information sector. The cyclus is marked by spatial concentration at first, followed by a déconcentration later. The predictions of this urban dynamics model are accordingly described as structurally determined. The actual urban configuration at any one time is considered to be the result of an interaction between internally structuring forces and externally intervening forces.
