ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on space, place and community as a means to consider if Straight Edge functions as a surrogate by exploring identity performance being enacted within these venues and squats in relation to key values and how they may relate to 'religion'. The use, misuse and appropriation of space remains a thorny but integral issue within all aspects of punk, including Straight Edge. Redefinition of a space has implications on activities such as 'hanging out', for in order to move with competence one has to be able to quickly assimilate subcultural capital from the ebb and flow of the various signage and ephemera, as well as the physical movement and interaction of other users. Within Straight Edge, symbols of the community are commonly seen through the wearing of tattoos, the inked X's on the hands, and the wearing of band t-shirts and band patches on the clothes, which will usually be self -applied.
