ABSTRACT

This chapter examines opportunities by focusing upon six areas of crime and unprofessional conduct in the digital age: electronic registration fraud; unregistered practice; online advertising; breach of confidentiality; theft and dishonesty; and some other specific forms of online unprofessional practice. Professionals are able to, and have throughout history, committed most forms of crime and unprofessional behaviour. Conducting professional work through the use of information technologies greatly enhances the ability of individuals to escape the requirements for professional registration. Information technologies have the potential to facilitate greatly the fraudulent registration of professionals. Digital technologies have greatly facilitated the commission of crimes of theft and dishonesty and it is likely that professionals will be involved in making use of the opportunities which have been created in the same way as others in the business community. Dishonest practices may relate to the online advertising of professional services and to attempts to secure the payment of fees by manipulating electronic payment systems.
