ABSTRACT

The articles collected in this volume have been written at different times over a period of almost four decades. They cover three main areas - development strategy, food security and trade and aid - corresponding roughly to three successive phases of my professional career, starting as a professor in Dhaka University, then as the head of a research organization in development economics in Pakistan and Bangladesh, subsequently as the head of economic and social policy department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and as an adviser at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The articles on food security were written mainly in the last phase. The articles have been classified into three areas as indicated above, even though a certain degree of overlapping could not be avoided, and have been presented in three different sections. In addition, the articles have not been arranged strictly in order of the dates of their publication; in each section they have been subclassified on the basis of closely linked issues or themes, irrespective of the exact dates of their publication.
