ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book looks at the purpose of higher education. It discusses how the literature makes links between higher education and lifelong learning in the context of applied learning and interpretation of knowledge within the wider world and in anticipation of the world of risk and uncertainty. The book also looks more closely at aspects of a higher education which might engage with the idea of nurturing the critical being but also offers a transparent learning framework with practical applicability in different situations. It explores higher education in the context of contemporary explorations of the future university as a learning organisation for the majority. The broadening concept of higher education and its societal role create new opportunities for engaging with the social wealth of different communities.
