ABSTRACT

Audio production is hard. Audio production in 3D is very hard. There is a level of accuracy and realism that needs to be achieved to help sell a convincing experience for the new reality formats. This chapter starts with a contribution from Garry Taylor, audio director for Sony Europe. Garry has been heavily involved with the development of virtual reality content and so has a clear perspective on where one is now and where one may end up. With the rise of machine learning, voice recognition systems, and natural language understanding, a new generation of tools could cut the cost of developing games significantly. The approach to audio production for the new realities may need to be adapted in several ways from how one created content for previous forms of media. All the other factors that influence how sound behaves are important in media production and critical for the new realities.
