ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on research and innovation serving to bring about emancipatory navigation. It also focuses on social innovation, following upon knowledge creation, and relational leadership, thereby also aligned with the inter-institutional genealogy, with a view to accomplishing innovation driven, institutional research. Technological, by way of comparison with social, innovation, at least in the industrialized world, is well established, conceptually and institutionally, most particularly in America. University-based research departments, in the natural sciences, corporate research laboratories and government-sponsored ones, separately or altogether, have small or large teams engaged in such scientific or technological innovation. In addition, every path has a particular emphasis, for example that of "healing nature and community" for the functional "southern" relational path. Most importantly, though, each path has an integral trajectory, equivalent to that in the natural sciences, from fundamental research to commercialization – or transformative action in the social arena – ultimately constituting innovation.
