ABSTRACT

FeesMustFall (FMF) university student revolts, as such, are an example of one of the "insurrections", "revolts" or "uprisings". The best that South African citizens and the world can do is "behave as if they felt that, with all its faults, the society were a going concern". The 2016 FMF protests, compared with the 2015 ones, were qualitatively different then. The shutdown of university was comparatively longer. There are several institutional changes that are going to happen as a result of FMF protests. One of these is, first and foremost, the structure and the culture of universities at the high level of management. FMF university student protests may be a call for reforms now and not a revolution now; the African National Congress (ANC) regime can only ignore the voices like the one below at its own expense: The neo-liberal ANC government has failed to deliver on the promise of free education.
