ABSTRACT

Despite its membership-based organizational structure, European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA) has played its part in facilitating the corporate capture of food banking across Europe. The international corporate capture of food charity was further advanced in 2006 when International Food Bank Services consulting organization became the Global Foodbanking Network. Food banking in the US likewise benefits from the corporate good will and star power of Hollywood and Nashville celebrities as well as the professional sports machine. The warehouse model of collecting, storing and distributing wasted and surplus food was indeed a simple and publicly accepted idea which with powerful religious, community and corporate backing has expanded worldwide, including within the rich Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Feeding America has been a powerful catalyst for the corporate capture and national consolidation of charitable food banking in the United States an idea which has been emulated and acted upon within other OECD food bank nations.
