ABSTRACT

Three lifestyle behaviors — smoking, diet, and lack of exercise — contribute to poor health and exacerbate chronic conditions, which account for nearly 75% of healthcare costs. It is very difficult to address all three behaviors at once, especially since smoking and diet require individuals to make significant behavioral changes. But, addressing just exercise or activity can make a difference. Increasing activity can have a major impact on many chronic conditions including hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and mental health according to the CDC. The challenge is getting consumers to be less sedentary and more active. The CDC reports that 60% of U.S. adults are not regularly physically active and 25% of all adults are not active at all.
