ABSTRACT

Many sports develop from a relatively simple formula: state the objective of the game, define the rules, pick teams, schedule an event, and play ball. This chapter explores the history of technology in sport and presents a foundation for understanding the effects of advanced technology on athletic games. Moreover, it intends to provoke thoughtful dialogue about the ethical considerations of advanced technology in sport. Technology serves as "human-made means to reach human interests and goals", and technology in sport accomplishes these purposes. Sporting equipment and apparel enable athletes to train across a broad spectrum of sport from elite sport participation in the Olympics and in professional athletics to those amateur athletes engaging in leisure time sport and physical activity. The expanding fields of sports medicine and sports training focus on helping athletes improve athletic performance, recover from injury, and prevent the occurrence of future injuries.
