ABSTRACT

This chapter is structured as follows. First, EU policies towards regionalism and multilateralism will be analyzed. Questions that will be dealt with are the factors behind the conduct of an EU policy in favor of RTAs, and the way in which the choice for regionalism has affected the EU approach towards multilateralism. Second, the same kind of questions will be dealt with for the United States. In a final part of this chapter, we will try to extrapolate from these two case studies towards the question whether multilateralism and regionalism are mutually exclusive in the domestic realm of states and customs territories.
