ABSTRACT

A facet is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as ‘one side of a many sided body’. Subjects can be broken down into constituent sides or parts and the word faceted, as we saw in Chapter 2, may therefore be applied to a classification which works on an analytico-synthetic principle. Fundamental concepts are analysed and grouped together into facets. These concepts can then be combined or synthesized as necessary to form more complex subjects. The following further example should help to make this principle clearer.
