ABSTRACT

Josephine Shaw, from whose work the above example is taken, suggests that such a system might be suitable for the products, supplies, services and functions of an organization. She cites as an advantage the flexibility which the system offers, in that it is easy to subdivide and add topics, but, in her view, a disadvantage is the fact that an index is essential. She therefore advocates a combination of systems for storing and retrieving information in the office and recommends ‘direct filing’, that is, alphabetical sequences by name, subject, and so on, where an index is not required.
