ABSTRACT

After all the unimaginable sufferings of the Mozambican people there were also three positive events while writing this report. On October the 4th, 1992 a cease-fire agreement was signed in Rome and shortly afterwards, the drought came to an end: it rained and it rained sufficiently. In October 1994 the first general elections were held and won by FRELIMO. So, the results of the survey which will be analysed in this chapter, must be

understood in the light or better in the darkness of Mozambique's history before the end of the war. It would be very interesting to repeat some of the questions since peace has been restored. Would the answers be significantly different, would people be less depressed or would it not make so much difference, since the structural adjustment programme has not yet hieved substantial improvements particularly in the countryside? As this survey was carried out in 1991, we can only examine peoples' sufferings, their problems, and their depressions at the time when the war was still going on, but we will also look into their pleasure and their satisfaction which existed even then alongside all the sufferings.
