ABSTRACT
As part of our attempt to develop a profile on the kinds of activities engaged in by young people in our three main research locations we obtained, from the Sussex Police Data Centre, statistics relating to crimes and offenders for the five Police Beat Areas encompassing our research locations. Three of these beats fall within Brighton and two fall within Hove. We have analysed the crime and offender data relating the years 1995 and 1996 (1995: the year prior to the research when the congregating issue apparently became a cause of some concern, 1996: the year of the research). We also examined Police incident-log data - calls to the police, complaints and initial reports of incidents - relating to the same periods.
