ABSTRACT

Construction managers use various terms in association with estimates and schedules, including "create," "report," "status," "update," and "revise." This chapter discusses cost and schedule updates and particularly the role of the project engineer and some of the technology tools that enable him or her to perform these operations. Schedules should be maintained in a manner similar to the way that record drawings and as-built estimates are maintained. Updating of the cost estimate starts almost immediately after submission of the original bid on a lump sum project or a cost proposal on a negotiated project. Errors are realized and must be corrected, and new information is discovered that can be incorporated into the estimate to make it even more accurate. Similarly to many concepts in construction management, the ultimate responsibility of cost and schedule control, as well as subsequent updates, lies with the project manager on the office side and the superintendent on the field side.
