ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Cosmopolitan Communication (Pearce, 1989) as a “Best Practice in Demonstrating Communication Proficiency” for Communication coaches, consultants, teachers, and trainers working with and among diverse populations. Based upon our work with military members and veterans, we present perspectives and strategies of Cosmopolitan Communication as means of cultivating intercultural competence, along with practical applications designed to facilitate sense-making and perspective-taking within complex social situations that involve unfamiliar contexts, divergent worldviews, or uncertain outcomes.
