ABSTRACT

Criminal proceedings were brought in a much higher number of cases in the English sample than in the Canadian sample. That so few Canadian cases were investigated by the police, is probably largely due to the policy of the Canadian child protection services not to routinely refer to the police. In contrast, the policy of the NSPCC in Northamptonshire was to involve the police in all case conferences for children referred for abuse, a policy reflective of the general practice in most places in Britain.
