ABSTRACT

In her groundbreaking book Governing the Young (1989) Barbara Finkelstein outlined succinctly the tendencies of educational historians to emphasise ‘the normative rather than the actual, prescription rather than practice, the ‘ought’ rather than the ‘is’ in classroom procedure’ (ibid., 36). Consequently there is a ‘silent history’ concerning the typical activities of teachers and pupils in schools.
