ABSTRACT

This paper is based upon a workshop session during which the University of Stirling Exercise Group for Older Participants (SUPERS) demonstrated a typical exercise class, designed to achieve and maintain fitness and health as a key feature of an active lifestyle. The demographic rationale for exercise in the older population is given and the benefits of an active lifestyle are outlined. These include economic factors as well as the maintenance of independence designed to enhance longevity and the quality of life. The principal effects of ageing on the body systems are detailed, and the outcomes of exercise are noted. Thereafter, guidelines are offered for fitness teaching with older participants.
