ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to develop a solution focused alternative high school program based on frequently asked questions about Garza. It also discusses the types of at-risk students that are served and how to select and orient those students within a solution focused alternative high school. The chapter provides how to train all staff in Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and describes how continuous professional development is necessary to assure the success of the school. In order to start a solution focused alternative school, creators must commit themselves to the mind-set of wanting a real change in education practices, one that is strengths oriented and student cantered. The solution focused school needs to hold a justified and independent status as a high school that will serve as an educational support program for other high schools in the district.
