ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss how to deliver curriculum and instruction in a solution focused alternative high school. They provide an approach to curriculum and instruction that follows the tenets of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and is designed to provide the following elements: high expectations and academic rigor, a goal-focused approach, small and personalized classrooms, self-paced learning. The authors illustrate senior e-portfolios and an individual graduation ceremony, known as a Star Walk, both of which show how the personalization and principles of SFBT are integrated into the core of the solution focused alternative school's instructional program. For many students at a solution focused alternative high school, the amount of individual time needed for a given lesson is far less than that required in a class of 30 students. The technology accessible to all the alternative high school students consists of the same standard computers and software available in classrooms across the school district.
