ABSTRACT
This essay was first published as a review of E.L. Woodward and Rohan Butler (eds), Documents on British Foreign Policy 1919-1939, Third Series, Vol. 2: 1938 (London, HMSO, 1949), in the New Statesman and Nation (15 October 1949). Alan Taylor also reviewed the volume in the Manchester Guardian, 13, 14 and 15 September 1949, the resulting essay being reprinted as 'Full Speed to Munich' in his collections of essays, Rumour of Wars (London, Hamish Hamilton, 1952) and Europe: Grandeur and Decline (Harmondsworth, Penguin, 1967).
