ABSTRACT

This essay was first published as a review of Documents on German Foreign Policy, Series D, Vol. 3: The Spanish Civil War (London, HMSO, 1951), in the New Statesman and Nation (14 April 1951). Alan Taylor also reviewed the volume in the Manchester Guardian (18 April 1951), an essay which was reprinted under the title 'Spain and the Axis' in his collection of essays, Rumours of Wars, (London, Hamish Hamilton, 1952) and Europe: Grandeur and Decline (Harmondsworth, Penguin, 1967). As well as his comments on Germany and Spain, this essay is also notable for his further thoughts on the value, or lack of value, of large, official collections of diplomatic documents.
