This essay was first published as a review of F.V. Parsons, The Origins of the Morocco Question 1880-1900 (London, Duckworth, 1976), in the Times Literary Supplement, 3898, 26 November 1976. Alan Taylor clearly enjoyed a major study on a subject he had written about 25 years earlier.
