ABSTRACT

Questions characterize mentoring interactions, especially when aiming toward facilitative rather than directive feedback. The purpose of this chapter is to offer advice to mentors for refining their questioning skills. Throughout the chapter, mentors are asked to analyze their questions: the variety they use with their mentees and how their questions may or may not communicate what is intended. The experiences of mentors are used to present different questioning techniques, and readers are encouraged to ask questions that lead toward mentee ownership. At the end of the chapter, readers are guided to compile question prompts, analyze questioning patterns, devise a questioning technique, and brainstorm for ways to use questions to encourage growth.
