ABSTRACT

A book on mentoring for language teachers needs to start with definitions of mentoring in general before moving on to specifics. After defining mentor, this chapter explains how mentoring occurs in the context of genuine and collaborative relationships and suggests roles and responsibilities for both parties in the relationship: mentor and mentee. Readers are encouraged to understand both their identity as a mentor and who their mentees are. The chapter then moves on to even more specific contexts, where one or both parties are working in cultures that are not their own or where they are working at a distance. Finally, there are suggestions for organizing a mentoring relationship, including negotiating a contract in order to keep all parties focused.
