ABSTRACT

Building on the foundation of genuine and collaborative relationships, this chapter turns the focus of mentee-centered mentoring to the mentees and their development needs. The chapter begins with tools for deciding on starting points and suggests that standards or benchmarks provide a frame of reference for identifying needs and checking progress on the journey toward teaching proficiency. Benchmarks are categorized and given a scope so that whole person needs can be identified. There are ideas for assessing needs initially in collaboration with mentees and for sharing in the move towards benchmarks that have been identified. Finally, as preliminary steps towards identifying needs, readers engage in an exercise in negotiating benchmarks and make a plan for needs assessment.
