ABSTRACT
The purpose of this part of the discussion is to begin to provide a clear account of the empirical investigation. The title of this chapter rather begs the question: how? What follows is presented as an approach to that question. This chapter elaborates the research methodology by firmly grounding it in the techniques of investigation actually implemented. Perhaps the central elaboration is the pragmatically cast discussion around the Graphics COPE package that will analyse the data from the research activity, the data from which forms the next chapter of this work. This element of the study is placed in this particular part of the document because it is wished to underline that the choice even of methods of analysis will itself tend towards influencing the data that are produced. Furthermore, this seems important especially in the light of the methodological sympathy towards ethnographic techniques shown in this work. However, before that issue may be addressed, the discussion examines the organisational contexts of British Telecommunications pic and British Gas (Eastern) pic. These related tasks are appropriate now that there has already been both a review of the general methodological approach used and also a summary of the academic literature judged relevant to the framing of the overall orientation of this work.
