ABSTRACT

In order to generate a comprehensive firm level primary data, two data gathering procedures were used for the survey of manufacturing firms. In literature, there has been diverse classification of firms into small, medium and large-scale enterprises, either based on sales turnover, capital outlay or persons employed. Like in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa, secondary statistical information is difficult to obtain in Nigeria; and when found, there could be significant discrepancies in information from different sources. For a low income country such as Nigeria, small-scale manufacturing enterprises are of much importance. As a starting point for the sector wide survey, the latest published version of the industrial directory of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) was used to ascertain the firms that are the likely candidates for the survey. The MAN directory contains names, addresses, factory locations, and possible contact person of about 2000 Nigerian firms.
