ABSTRACT

The previous Chapter identified how schools across eight different LEAs appeared to be competing against one another. This Chapter begins to examine the market place at a more detailed level by focussing on eight schools from three different LEAs, each representing different features of the ‘new’ education market place outlined in the previous Chapter. The aims of this Chapter are to present the characteristics of these study schools in three stages. First, it will illustrate the educational and competition characteristics of the schools using published data and the analysis of competition from the previous Chapter. The Chapter will then present the socio-economic characteristics of the intakes of these eight schools based on the postcode admissions data. The third stage will discuss the socio economic characteristics of different sets of pupils that comprise the schools’ intakes in order to make some preliminary observations of changes to the intakes of these schools due to the policy of open enrolment.
