Introduction

For thirty years after the Second World War, multinational enterprises (MNEs) have been recognised as one of the most effective agents for economic development. By the early 1980s, 200 MNEs accounted for a third of global GDP, or one and a half times the production of the world's less developed economies including Latin America, Africa, India and China.
