ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the research methodology used in the project, and explain some of the main statistical assumptions on which the work is based. It is convenient to use explanations of the statistical methods to also demonstrate some of the research findings. The main purposes of this research includes: to discover which non-CPS agencies were commonly prosecuting in magistrates' courts; to discover the extent of such prosecutions; to examine possible different patterns of non-CPS cases in respect of different types of magistrates' court. It also includes evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of the respective agencies in bringing such prosecutions; to identify and assess the implications of these findings in relation to public policy on criminal justice matters. Information concerning non-CPS prosecutions is collected and categorised neither centrally nor at individual courts.
