ABSTRACT

In the UK, cases such as the Channel Tunnel, nuclear waste processing, defence technology, the Millennium Dome and Millennium Bridge testify to the currency and relevance of the issues. This chapter revisits the case study material presented above with regard to the relevance of incremental approaches to the management and social control of technology. It discusses social control and management of technology as it is addressed by proponents and critics of incrementalism working in the fields of public administration and technology policy, who share a concern for understanding and improving the quality of decision-making in complex or uncertain situations. The chapter broadens the horizons of the work in seeking to make connections with the wider literature on the management of innovation and the construction of socially durable technology, and in pointing to some future avenues of research.
