DEVELOPMENT OF LONG-ACTING CONTRACEPTIVES: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES, FUTURE PROSPECTS The development and introduction of modern intrauterine devices (IUDs) in 1960, shortly after the advent of oral contraceptives, marked the beginning of the modern era of long-acting reversible contraception (34). IUDs were seen to be a solution to the problem of inconsistent use associated with contraceptive methods requiring repeated action, and those methods that were coitus related.
