ABSTRACT
Previous chapters have explored Nietzsche’s thinking on the themes of metaphysics and cosmology. Now I turn to some issues of epistemology and ethics with the same purpose - that is, to locate the development of Nietzsche’s ideas within a context provided by other writers of his own time. Their theories about the impulses and feelings out of which both claims to knowledge about the world and moral judgements arise are the background against which some of his most original ideas were formed. This chapter will substantiate the first of these claims by examining themes in his epistemology, leaving the corresponding discussion of moral values for the following chapter.
