ABSTRACT

The agricultural roots of rurality are explored by taking an inside look at the farm crisis, which began in the 1970s and continues today. This chapter examines its causes, results, and possible solutions. It also takes an in-depth look at the farm bill, its makeup, and its effect on farmers and their families. It examines key facts of farming today in the United States and provides famous farming quotes. It takes a look at the suicide increase among farmers, so often the desolate result of losing the family farm. It also provides case studies. Mental illness and substance abuse are re-emerging as their own farming crisis today.
