ABSTRACT

In this project several socio-economic variables are assessed. Each respondent in the study is influenced by a wide range of factors when making day to day decisions about the allocation of resources on the farm, in the household and between families. As mentioned earlier, farming families are subject to many risks, including those concerning health, politics and natural disasters. Even with the assistance of statistical analysis it is often difficult to tell which factor will influence most strongly any decision, since factors may be inter-related. It is difficult to know where to begin in constructing socio-economic profiles, particularly because of linkages between socio-economic criteria. However, income is probably the greatest leveller as it is likely to be related to more of the other factors than alternative criteria would be.
