ABSTRACT

In developing countries, especially in Asia, the growth of cities is occurring at a much faster rate than ever before. According to the United Nations forecast on population, by the year 2025, approximately one billion people will live in urban centres in Asian countries (Bhattacharya, 1990). This will give rise to some serious problems associated with dense population. Examples include slums, unhygienic environment and general chaos. Each developing country has its own strategy for solving these problems. Basically, the strategy is the promotion of a better settlement that conforms to the local culture.
