ABSTRACT

A Geological Medley sculpture has inspired many of the comprehensive images on which civilizations have been based, in those countries, at least, around the Mediterranean where the climatic condition to be described causes limestone to provoke images of the greatest power. The interaction of limestone and water is always poetic, always appealing to the imagination. In the first instance, it was the waters that fed those organisms whose remains formed the nucleus of limestones: it was the waters that carried the calcium carbonate which cemented those remains into rock. The story of limestone and water has many further chapters that are palpable to the senses, many variations: and the men who obtained nourishment from this environment soon conceived those many aspects of life and death which, when forming some calm or 'objective5 whole, we name culture. Even directly, we shall deduce from the frequency of limestone in the Grecian and Italic lands, in the Mediterranean basin as a whole, fundamental fantasies that are readily projected as the fundamental forms x of classical visual art.
