ABSTRACT

Since the 1980s, discussions among economic geographers have generated a range of theories and concepts about the origins and dynamics of 'New Industrial Districts (NIDs )'. Despite this theoretical debate, however, efforts to reproduce industrial districts of the same calibre as Silicon Valley in California in other nations and regions have had little success. The work of economic geographers does not seem to have met the needs of policy makers who have tried to imitate the success of Silicon Valley.
