ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 shows that there are differences in the success rates of applicants for pre-registration nursing and midwifery training that cannot be explained solely by reference to the characteristics of the applicants themselves. There has been little research to date on the extent to which the selection systems utilised by nurse education and training institutions accord with the principles of fairness and equity normally associated with effective equal opportunities policies.1 Accordingly, this chapter focuses on the processes used by nurse education and training institutions for the selection of applicants for training in nursing and midwifery.
