ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book examines the social dimensions to housing access among the poor, and in doing so, the theoretical basis of the study has been positioned within the neo-marxist critique of self-help housing policies as a means of engaging in the theoretical, methodological and ideological debates around the roles of the state, individual and market forces. It explores the settlement processes of households around the walled city. The book highlights many of the central themes in approaches to poverty and housing in Third World cities. The historical development of each path within the low-income housing system was traced, and the options available to newly arrived migrants were identified as being primarily within jhuggi settlements due to their limited economic power and relatively low social status.
