ABSTRACT

From the early years when it was a struggle to get the vehicles to go at all, the industry had achieved a fair degree of success by the beginning of the First World War. However, by the beginning of the Second World War the industry still consisted mainly of a great number of small firms. There had been a National Association of Traction Engine Owners and Users by the end of the last century and very soon after steam and petrol wagons got going at the beginning of the twentieth century there arose the Motor Vehicle and Wagon Users' Association. At the beginning of April 1932 the short-distance and the long-distance hauliers' bodies decided to amalgamate under the title of the Road Haulage Association (RHA). But membership of the RHA grew steadily. By the end of the year it had over 1300 members. So, the industry was established and growing.
